#155 Affordable professional coaching supervision – what are my options?
I set up Grow the Coach in 2020 with a mission to provide affordable supervision for coaches at all career stages. What do you get by investing in supervision, and what does it cost?
Supervision is primarily about your development as a coach. It is also about keeping you and your clients safe. So, investing in supervision supports you in being a better, safer coach, so your clients receive better, safer coaching.
I have a general rule of one hour of supervision for every 30 hours of coaching you do, which is very roughly 3%.
Example: expected annual coaching hours x hourly coaching rate = £30,000.
3% x £30,000 = £900.
In other words, if you earn £30k from coaching, you can afford individual supervision. I offer six individual hourly sessions per annum @ £150 per hour, just 3% of your annual income.
But what if you are not earning £30k from coaching? Then what are your options?
I earn less than £30k, due to my coaching hours
If you earn less than £30k from coaching because you do fewer hours, you might consider less frequent supervision, say quarterly, or supervision as part of a small, private group. Group supervision typically costs less than individual supervision and has the benefit of reflecting on your practice with a peer group as well as a professional supervisor. I offer group quarterly supervision in groups of 3-4 for £120 per person per 2-hour session, which works out at just £40 per month over 12 months.
I earn less than £30k, due to my coaching rate
As well as small private group supervision, starting in 2026, I will be offering larger group supervision:
· Private groups of 5-8 participants from £30 per month (6x 2-hour sessions pa)
· Large open groups of 8-24 participants at £20 per month (6x 2-hour sessions pa)
How it works: unlike small private groups where we always ensure everyone has the chance to bring a case, theme or question at every supervision session, larger groups discuss and agree on topics at the start of each session. Because you sign up for six sessions over the year, you can expect to have your specific topic discussed less frequently. There is still a significant benefit in attending to hear from and contribute to others’ reflections.
Perhaps 2026 is the year to invest in your development through coaching supervision. Please email me jeremy@growthecoach.com to express interest in applying for a place on one of my new, larger supervision groups. You can find out more about me and my practice at www.growthecoach.com.
