#135 What do you do when you lose 20% of your business in one day?

I’ve been offering coaching supervision for over five years now. The business has grown steadily since launch. By the end of 2024, I had built up a roster of 23 individual supervisees and six supervision groups, whom I see regularly (between four and eight times per year). My clients are a mix of solo coaching practitioners, partnerships, training organisations, and corporates. It’s not huge, but it keeps me usefully occupied.

Some clients have come and gone over the years, which is to be expected as their needs for supervision change. Overall, I’ve been happy with the steady growth of my practice. I still do a bit of coaching, too, to keep my hand in!

Last month, at a single stroke, I lost eight supervisees. Alongside three other professionals, I had been supervising internal coaches at one client since 2021. The reason, rather worryingly, was that the internal coach role at that organisation was scrapped. I feel devastated for the 30+ people who are now looking to deploy their coaching skills elsewhere or accept internal redeployment opportunities outwith coaching.

For my practice, a 20% drop in business is not ideal, but it’s not existential.

What would you do if you lost 20% of your business in a day?

For me, the lesson is simple: don’t put your eggs in one basket!

And the message is simple, too: I now have the capacity to take on more supervisees (individual or group). If you are interested in developing your coaching and reflective practice through supervision, contact me here.
